Looking for tenders in Hobart and across Tasmania? You’re not alone. Finding the right opportunities can feel overwhelming but it doesn’t have to. This guide shows you where to look, what platforms actually work, and how to set yourself up for success.

If you're a business owner or bid manager in Tasmania, here’s your heads-up: now is the time to double down on tendering opportunities across Hobart and the regions.

Strategic procurement planning is well underway, and a steady stream of RFx (Requests for Tender/Quote/Proposal) are being released by Tasmanian Government departments, councils, and agencies. Whether you're in infrastructure, services, training, tech, or consulting, there’s opportunity here for you.

Start with Tasmanian Government Tenders. Run by Treasury, it is the main source for state contracts and awarded-contract history. Register for free and set category notifications. Then add the Business Tasmania weekly tender update, the easiest way to scan state, federal and ICN opportunities in one place. One Tasmanian habit to build: a lot of smaller work goes out as RFQs, direct approaches to a few suppliers, not open tenders. Being registered and correctly categorised matters as much as searching the listings.

Tasmania backs local harder than any other state, and it is scored. The Buy Local policy applies an Economic and Social Benefits Test worth 30% of the evaluation, up from 25% in August 2024. That is close to a third of your score before anyone reads your methodology. For competitive work over $100,000, agencies must approach at least two Tasmanian businesses where local capability exists. Spell out your Tasmanian presence, jobs and supply chain in plain terms. And from 16 April 2026, a Supplier Code of Conduct applies to every Tasmanian Government contract, whatever the value, so make sure you can meet it.

Where to find current and upcoming Tasmanian tenders:

  • State Government contracts and awarded history (tenders.tas.gov.au)
  • Greater Hobart council RFQs and panels via TenderLink and VendorPanel
  • Aggregators of public and private sector tenders

Two things worth knowing before you start. Greater Hobart councils do not share one system. The City of Hobart, Kingborough and Glenorchy use TenderLink, Clarence uses VendorPanel, and Brighton runs its own tender page and still advertises in The Mercury. Register on TenderLink and VendorPanel so you cover most of them, and check Brighton directly.

A word on what buyers here actually worry about. Tasmania is an island, so agencies weigh whether you can deliver reliably across Bass Strait. If you are mainland-based, address logistics and supply chain head-on rather than hoping it goes unnoticed. If you are local, make your Tasmanian base and stock a feature. It is often the quiet difference between a safe choice and a risky one.

If you want to look for not for profit or private/public company tenders, you are going to have to hustle. They are not bound by any legislation to publicly advertise their opportunities, so the only way to break into them is through good old-fashioned new business development. Research the person to speak to, get an introduction / call them up, make an appointment, find out their needs etc etc.

But let’s be honest. An opportunity comes up, you learn about it, you put a bid in. That’s still no guarantee of success.

Most businesses miss out, and it’s rarely a qualification problem. They:

  • Submit cookie-cutter bids,
  • Miss critical compliance details,
  • Or don’t understand how tenders are really evaluated.

If you’ve lost tenders to “better-prepared” rivals or for reasons unknown, you’re not alone. Many Tasmanian suppliers are operating reactively by pulling together bids at the last minute, under pressure, with no strategy behind the submission.

What actually works:

  • Positioning before the tender is released,
  • Strategic go/no-go filtering,
  • Clear, direct answers that map to evaluation criteria (not "blah blah aren't we good"),
  • And strong local presence that de-risks your offer for buyers.

Most Tasmanian agencies also publish procurement plans, contract expiry timelines and awarded contracts, which is perfect if you want to plan your BD cycle 12 to 18 months out. Search the awarded contracts on Tasmanian Government Tenders and AusTender to see who holds the work and when it comes back to market.
